Common Jobs for a Cherry Picker

A cherry picker puts a worker in a basket at the end of a boom, so it can reach up and over things a ladder or scissor lift cannot. Our customers hire cherry pickers for jobs like these.

Building Maintenance
and Repairs

Gutters, roofs, lighting and facade repairs where the work sits above or beyond an obstacle. A knuckle boom lets the operator reach up and over to position the basket.

Signage and
Electrical Work

Installing and servicing signage, lighting and cabling at height, from shopfronts to poles. Boom lifts are commonly used for electrical work and signage installation.

Warehouse and
Indoor Work

Electric cherry pickers produce no exhaust and have non-marking tyres, so they suit warehouses, shopping centres and fit-outs where fumes and floor marks are not an option.

Window Cleaning and
Tree Trimming

Boom lifts are also used for window cleaning and tree trimming, putting the operator right next to windows, eaves and branches that a ladder cannot safely reach.

Tight Access and
Narrow Aisles

Compact battery electric mast booms fit through doorways and down narrow aisles, so you can get a small cherry picker into spaces where a larger machine will not fit.

Cherry Picker Sizes

Choose a cherry picker by the height you need to work at, how far you need to reach sideways, and the ground you will drive on. As a rough guide, working height is the platform height plus about 2 m.

Cherry Picker or Scissor Lift?

A scissor lift goes straight up and gives you a large, stable platform for overhead work. A cherry picker gives you reach as well as height, so it is the better choice when the work is above an obstacle, over a roof edge or out from the base of the machine. If you are unsure, call us or read our guide on how to choose the right cherry picker.

Cherry Picker Licences and Yellow Card Training

SafeWork NSW treats operating a boom-type elevating work platform with a boom length of 11 metres or more as high risk work, which needs a High Risk Work Licence (class WP). For smaller cherry pickers, an EWPA Yellow Card shows the operator is trained. Our Yellow Card courses cover boom lifts, scissor lifts and vertical lifts, run weekly at our Arndell Park training facility and typically take 2 to 3 hours. We can also train your team at your workplace in Sydney. Bring valid identification to enrol.

Cherry Picker Hire FAQs

What is a cherry picker?

A cherry picker is a boom lift: a machine with a platform or basket on the end of a hinged or telescopic arm that lifts a worker and their tools to the job. Our cherry pickers include electric and diesel knuckle booms, telescopic booms and compact mast booms.

Can I hire a small cherry picker for indoor work?

Yes. Our mast booms are battery electric, fit through doorways and narrow aisles and have non-marking tyres. Compact electric knuckle booms such as the Genie Z-30/20N also drive through standard doorways and produce no exhaust.

How high does a cherry picker go?

It depends on the model. Our smaller mast booms work at around 8 to 10 m, compact electric knuckle booms reach about 11 to 16 m, and our larger diesel booms reach working heights over 25 m.

Do I need a licence to use a cherry picker?

You need a High Risk Work Licence (class WP) to operate a boom-type elevating work platform with a boom length of 11 metres or more. For smaller machines, an EWPA Yellow Card is the usual proof of training, and we run Yellow Card courses every week.

How much does it cost to hire a cherry picker?

Cherry picker hire costs depend on the machine size, how long you need it and the delivery location. Longer hires generally cost less per day. Call 1300 851 447 for an obligation-free quote.

Do you deliver cherry pickers to Newcastle and Wollongong?

Yes. Short-term hire covers the Sydney metro, Newcastle and Wollongong, and long-term hire is available Australia wide.

What is the difference between a cherry picker and a scissor lift?

A scissor lift rises straight up with a wide platform, which suits ceilings and overhead work directly above the machine. A cherry picker has an arm that reaches up and out, so it can get over obstacles and away from the base. See our scissor lift hire range if you only need vertical lift.

Can you train our operators?

Yes. Yellow Card courses run weekly at our Arndell Park training facility, and we can also deliver training at your workplace in Sydney.
