Knuckle Boom Lift Hire Sydney

A knuckle boom lift, also called an articulating boom lift, has a hinged arm that bends so the platform can reach up, out and over obstacles. Power Access hires knuckle booms across Sydney from our Arndell Park depot, with electric models for indoor work and diesel 4×4 models for outdoor sites and rough ground. Our range includes Genie, JLG and Snorkel machines on daily, weekly or monthly hire.

When a Knuckle Boom Is the Right Machine

The articulating arm is what sets a knuckle boom apart. It lets the operator lift up, bend over an obstacle and then reach down or out to the work, which a scissor lift or straight telescopic boom cannot do. Typical jobs include:

Z30/20N electric boom lift hire

Up and Over
Reach

Work above awnings, plant, machinery and roof edges, where the platform has to clear an obstacle first. The Genie Z-30/20N, for example, has an up and over clearance of 3.86 m.

Z34/22IC diesel knuckle boom lift hire

Indoor and
Confined Spaces

Electric knuckle booms are quiet with no exhaust. Compact models like the Z-30/20N have zero tailswing, so they can work close to walls and in congested areas.

Z45/25J RT diesel knuckle boom lift hire

Outdoor Construction
Sites

Diesel 4x4 knuckle booms handle uneven ground on construction and industrial sites. The Genie Z-45/25J RT has an active oscillating axle to help keep traction on rough terrain.

Building
Maintenance

Reach gutters, eaves, facades and roof edges, using the articulating arm and jib to fine-tune the platform position. The JLG 600AJ offers an optional articulating jib for hard-to-reach spots.

High Reach
Outdoor Work

For higher outdoor work, the JLG 800AJ has a platform height of 24.46 m and 15.74 m of horizontal outreach, with a 230 kg platform capacity.

Electric or Diesel Knuckle Boom?

Choose electric for indoor work, finished floors and sites with emission or noise limits. Choose diesel 4×4 for outdoor construction, uneven ground and bigger heights. If your job moves between indoors and outdoors, a hybrid boom may suit better. Compare them on our electric boom lift hire and diesel knuckle boom hire pages.

Licensing for Knuckle Boom Lifts

Under NSW rules, a High Risk Work Licence (class WP) is needed to operate a boom-type elevating work platform with a boom length of 11 metres or more. SafeWork NSW counts horizontal reach as well as height, so a knuckle boom with a long outreach can need a WP licence even when the platform height is under 11 m. For smaller machines, operators should hold an EWPA Yellow Card, and our Yellow Card training runs weekly at Arndell Park or at your workplace.

Knuckle Boom Lift Hire FAQs

What is a knuckle boom lift?

A knuckle boom lift is a boom-type elevating work platform with a hinged arm. The joint in the arm lets the platform go up, over an obstacle and then out or down to the work.

Is a knuckle boom the same as an articulating boom lift?

Yes. Knuckle boom and articulating boom describe the same type of machine. Genie and JLG list these models as articulating boom lifts.

What is the difference between a knuckle boom and a telescopic boom?

A knuckle boom bends to get around obstacles. A telescopic boom has a straight arm that extends for maximum height and outreach in open areas. If there is something between the machine and the work, a knuckle boom is usually the better fit.

Can I use a knuckle boom indoors?

Yes. Our electric knuckle booms run quietly with no exhaust and have non-marking tyres. Compact models such as the Genie Z-30/20N drive through standard doorways.

Do I need a licence to operate a knuckle boom?

A High Risk Work Licence (class WP) is needed when the boom length is 11 metres or more, measured by height or horizontal reach, whichever is longer. For smaller units, an EWPA Yellow Card is recommended, and we run Yellow Card courses weekly.

How far can a knuckle boom reach?

Across our range, horizontal outreach runs from 6.25 m on a 30 ft electric knuckle boom to 18.28 m on an 80 ft diesel knuckle boom. Check the table above for each size.

How much does knuckle boom hire cost?

The cost depends on the size of the machine, electric or diesel, the hire length and the delivery location. Longer hires generally cost less per day. Call 1300 851 447 for an obligation-free quote.

Do you sell knuckle boom lifts?

Yes. Power Access also sells new and used access equipment. See our knuckle boom lifts for sale or call us to discuss.
